Grow your own chillies…

May sees the start of our Chilli Festival here at Bell Plantation.

We think these plants are an ideal plant for you to grow and here are our top reasons why:

  1. Easy to Grow – great for beginners or if you are tight on space. They also can last for more than one season.
  2. Huge Variety – Growing chillies at home means there is a huge variety you can choose from. Whether you are looking for a chilli that is mild or one that packs a punch you can choose!
  3. Incredibly versatile. Chilli plants can be grown on sunny windowsills, in a greenhouse, or directly in the ground. Did you know they are also great for containers and with their brightly coloured fruits they are great to brighten up an area.

Which Chilli to choose?

Whether you want your chillies to be mild or sizzling hot there is a huge range available. Why not consider planting a few different ones to try and see which ones you enjoy the most.

Some of the most popular ones are:

Jalapeno Medium – medium heat, ideal for salsas and pizza toppings

Scotch Bonnet – this is for the spice lovers as it packs a real punch with a Sweet, Fruity, Tropical, Earthy flavour

Havanna Gold – These eye catching ‘Gold Havanna’s’ are crisp, thin fleshed, mild chillies that have a rich complex flavour. Ideal for eating fresh when the flavour can be really appreciated, they also dry extremely well.

Hungarian Black – There fruit is a dark hued skin with a rich red tone as it ages. This pepper delivers a sweetness  like no others in it’s heat range. They are great as an ornamental pepper but also great to eat with it’s medium heat and great for salsa’s or salads.
