Maintaining a healthy lawn requires some consistent care that adapts with the changing seasons. This guide provides a straightforward, month-by-month breakdown of essential lawn care tasks, ensuring your garden thrives throughout the year. We’ll cover everything from seasonal feeding and mowing schedules to weed control, offering practical advice to keep your lawn in optimal condition.

There is very little work to do on well established lawn this month, apart from removing fallen leaves you can do nothing to help the lawn in the wet and cold conditions which is common for this time of year. if possible try not to walk on the lawn if its waterlogged or frozen as this can damage the soil and root systems.

As the weather starts to improve you may start to see worm casts appearing on your lawn, scatter them using a besom broom or something similar when they are dry, it may be tempting to start to think about cutting your lawn for the first time but hold off till March for best results.

The lawn programme really starts this month, as soon as the weather is warmer and the grass has started to grow its time to get out there and begin the programme. Spike badly drained lawns using a garden fork or aerator and brush in a mixture of sand and peat free top soil. Mossy lawns can be treated with a liquid or granular moss killer, rake and scarify the lawn to remove the moss once its killed off, it should try black.

Apply a feed with a lawn fertiliser, however do not apply a selective lawn weedkiller until two or three weeks after feeding. Mowing can begin for established lawns with the mower blades set on a high setting for the first cut of the year. Rake the soil surface and then sow a good quality grass seed , sow evenly over the lawn and ensuring the new seed fills the gaps preventing further weed or moss growth and generally improving the appearance of your lawn.

Mow at least once a week continue to spike and feed if required or you weren’t able to do April due to weather conditions. The soil is usually moist in May but a prolonged dry spell can occur, if this happens water before obvious signs of stress.

Summer mowing should be under way twice a week mowing will be necessary when the soil moist, if there is a dry spell raise the height of the mower blades and do not use the grass box. Further applications of a selective lawn weedkiller may be required to kill persistent weeds such as clover.

Continue to mow but not to low in very dry conditions, water in dry spells unless there is a water shortage. Clover, pearlwort and yarrow may suddenly appear on your lawn, to combat this use a good selective lawn weedkiller, for smaller weeds consider using a daisy grubber and physically remove by hand.

Mow as required and do not allow to dry out. August is the last month of the year for weed killing and for feeding with a nitrogen rich based fertiliser, seed sowing can begin late august if required.

Apply autumn lawn fertiliser, re sown worn patches and start to raise the mower blades when mowing. Apply a selective lawn weedkiller if needed, repeat moss treatment, remove dead (black) moss by raking or scarifying ready to re sow in April. Carry out any lawn repairs if required bumps, hollows, broken edges and bare patches can all be rectified and completed this month.

Regular mowing comes to a end during October consider the best time for the final cut of the year, you want to pick a fine dry spell. raise the mower height and brush off any dew or raindrops before cutting, lawn edges should be trimmed for the winter. Apply a autumn lawn fertiliser, brush up any fallen leaves which would harm the grass and increase the chances of worm casts if left on the surface.

Sweep up any leaves as they fall as they will damage the lawn if left over winter. If the weather hasn’t allowed you to do the final cut of the year, make sure you make final mowing arrangements this month if haven’t already done so. November is to late for seed sowing however its a good month for laying turf.

Apart from brushing away leaves, December is the slack end of to a busy year. Keep off the lawn when its wet or frozen, if you have to walk or wheel heavy loads consider laying down boards to prevent damaging the lawn. Turfing is still possible if the weather conditions allow.
