Gardening Tips, Summer, What's New
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas, with their showy clusters of blooms in shades ranging from delicate pastels to vibrant jewel tones, are a beloved addition to gardens and landscapes worldwide.

Flower Colour Can Change with Soil pH
For some hydrangea varieties, particularly Hydrangea macrophylla (Bigleaf Hydrangea) and Hydrangea serrata (Mountain Hydrangea), the colour of their flowers is influenced by the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. Acidic soils (low pH) tend to produce blue flowers, while alkaline soils (high pH) often result in pink or red blooms. White hydrangeas are generally not affected by soil pH.

They are Native to Asia and the Americas
While popular in gardens worldwide, hydrangeas are native to eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, and the Himalayas) and North and South America.

Many Types Exist with Diverse Flower Shapes
Hydrangeas are not a single type of flower. There are several distinct species, including mopheads (large, round flower clusters), lace caps (flattened flowerheads with a ring of showy florets), panicle hydrangeas (cone-shaped flower clusters), smooth hydrangeas (large, round white flowers), and climbing hydrangeas (vine-like).

Some Varieties Bloom on Old Wood, Others on New Wood
Understanding this is crucial for proper pruning. “Old wood” bloomers form their flower buds on the previous year’s growth, while “new wood” bloomers develop flowers on the current season’s growth. Pruning at the wrong time can remove the potential for flowers.

The Showy “Petals” are Actually Sepals
What appear to be the petals of a hydrangea flower are actually sepals, which are modified leaves that protect the developing flower bud. The true flowers are often small and inconspicuous in the centre of the sepal clusters.

Hydrangeas Symbolize Gratitude, Grace, and Beauty
In the language of flowers, hydrangeas often represent heartfelt emotions, gratitude for being understood, grace, and beauty. Different colours can also carry slightly varied symbolic meanings.
With their captivating blooms and fascinating characteristics, hydrangeas are a rewarding addition to any garden, offering beauty and intrigue throughout the seasons. Explore the diverse world of hydrangeas and discover the perfect varieties to enhance your outdoor space, pop in a see for yourself.
