Creating A Colourful Autumn Garden
As summer begins to fade, your garden doesn’t have to lose its colour. In fact, autumn can be one of the most beautiful seasons in the garden, with rich reds, golden yellows, warm oranges and deep pinks bringing borders, pots and containers to life.
Whether you have a large garden or a small patio, there are plenty of ways to add colour and interest that will carry you through the autumn months and into winter.

Start with autumn bedding
One of the easiest ways to introduce instant colour is with autumn bedding plants. They’re perfect for filling gaps in borders, brightening up pots and creating seasonal displays around patios, doorways and entrances.
Think cheerful pansies, violas, cyclamen and other seasonal favourites. Plant them in groups for a bigger impact, or mix different colours and textures together to create a more relaxed, cottage-garden feel.
Autumn bedding also works beautifully in containers, making it easy to refresh your garden without having to completely redesign your borders.

Add long-lasting colour with perennials
If you’re looking for plants that will give you more than just a seasonal display, autumn is a great time to plant perennials.
Rudbeckia is a fantastic choice, with its cheerful daisy-like flowers bringing vibrant yellow and golden tones to the garden. Their flowers can continue well into autumn and are also loved by pollinating insects.
Echinacea is another beautiful addition. Its distinctive flowers add colour and structure to borders, while the seed heads can provide interest later in the season.
For a really colourful display, combine these with other late-flowering perennials in complementary colours and different heights.
Don’t forget the foliage
Autumn colour isn’t all about flowers. Some of the most spectacular displays come from foliage.
Look out for plants with leaves in shades of bronze, burgundy, purple, gold and fiery orange. Shrubs such as Hebes can provide structure and evergreen interest, helping your garden continue to look good even after many of your summer flowers have finished.
Or, if you want to create a real autumn spectacle, consider adding trees and shrubs known for their autumn foliage. Their changing leaves can provide a beautiful backdrop for your bedding and perennials.
Give your pots an autumn makeover
You don’t need a huge garden to enjoy autumn colour.
Containers are one of the easiest ways to introduce seasonal planting, and they can be moved around your garden whenever you fancy a change.
Try combining:
Colourful bedding plants
Evergreen foliage
Grasses for movement and texture
Small shrubs for structure
Late-flowering perennials
For an eye-catching display, choose a mixture of heights. Place taller plants towards the back, add medium-height plants in the centre and let trailing plants spill over the edges.
Plant now for a beautiful spring
One of the great things about autumn is that it isn’t just about enjoying the garden now — it’s also the perfect time to plant for the future.
The soil is still warm after summer, while cooler temperatures and increased rainfall can help newly planted plants establish their roots. This means you can get your garden settled before winter and give plants a head start for the following growing season.
Autumn is also a fantastic time to plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, crocuses and alliums. Tuck them into borders and containers now and you’ll be rewarded with a splash of colour when spring arrives.
Make the most of every corner
When planning your autumn garden, don’t forget the little spaces.
A few colourful pots around your front door can instantly make your home feel more welcoming. A collection of autumn containers can brighten up a patio, while a few well-chosen plants can transform a balcony or small courtyard.
You can even bring autumn colour into unexpected areas by planting around seating areas, paths and garden buildings.
