Controlling weeds sustainably is a great way to look after your garden and our planet.
In this post, we’ll explore some effective and eco-friendly strategies for controlling weeds in your garden. Harsh chemicals don’t have to be the answer as they have a lot of negative consequences on not just the weeds. There is a way to protect you garden from weeds without harming good wildlife and plants.

Using organic mulch and weed stop material
Smother persistent perennial weeds with a heavy-duty plastic weed stop material to prevent weeds from growing as they require light like all plants do to grow. Consider other methods to prevent weeds from growing from adjoining gardens by sinking a barrier of black polythene to combat the spread. Using organic mulch such as bark, well-rotted farmyard manure can also help to keep weeds under control without using a chemical-based product.

Dig out large established weeds
Using a garden spade or border fork to remove larger weeds that are well established in the border. Try lifting out as much as the root system as possible to avoid regrowth and weeds setting seed in other areas of your garden.

Hoe off seedlings
Gently run a hoe over your garden borders between your plants to remove most common annual weed seedlings. The benefit of using a garden hoe it removes weeds effectively and quickly it also minimises soil disturbance, helping to maintain good soil health.

Manually pull out by hand
Most garden weeds can be easily removed by pulling them out of the soil using your hand while wearing gloves, to deal with tougher, stronger perennial weeds you can use a hand fork and gently lever out the root ball with as much as roots as possible.
