Hedging
“A living fence”
Hedges are the backbone of garden design. They provide colour and interest, or perhaps a quiet backdrop, ensure privacy and give shelter from wind or shade from sun.
Hedging can split up area of land, from the edging of flower beds to boundary planting.
Hedging is an unbroken line of close set plants, many shrubs can give this effect to create either a formal or informal hedge.
- Formal hedges are rows of plants clipped to a solid line to give a close knitted texture e.g. Box – ideal for path edging
- Informal Hedges are rows of plants grown close together without severe outlines e.g. Lavender– ideal for a softer looking hedge.
Hedging can be bought in two main ways.. Bare root and containerised plants.
Bare root – a very economical way of purchasing plants in quantity as they are not potted, however they take longer to establish than pot grown hegdings specimens. Bare root hedging is available in the winter months when the plants are dormant..
Containerised – this is a good option if you require a larger, or want a quick fix, hedge. The choices for pot grown hedging varieties are much greater as bare root hedging is limited to certain species.
